Caption: Yangon Division, Myanmar - Jul 1989. Aung San Suu Kyi, Secretary General of the National League for Democracy and 1991 Nobel Peace Laureate. Taken in early July 1989 when she was touring suburbs in the capital and addressing peaceful rallies of up to 10,000 people. During these talks, she specifically blamed the country's numerous woes on 'retired' strongman General Ne Win. This is most probably why she was locked up for six years of house arrest on 20 July. She was accompanied everywhere at the time by student bodyguards wearing the distinctive peach tunics of the NLD.
